Day 103: Filming with Tomer

Updated: Nov 19, 2022

I (Sam) woke up in a shed off the side of the road to Tomer barging in, which was honestly a little intimating. He filmed us getting up and packed and later met us at a Subway about half of a mile down the road. At Subway, I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich which was quite delicious and a great way to start the day. Once we got going, Tomer gave us microphones and began interviewing James. I would be interviewed later and because filming requires slightly slower walking, I built up a small lead. I noticed James walking on a dirt path next to the highway, but I suspected it could lead me to a flat tire. Unfortunately, James picked up flats in both of his back wheels which held him up a bit. Given the current unrest in Iran, I decided to listen to a couple of podcasts covering the history of modern Iran. I listened to these until our midpoint for the day (about 13 miles in). Because there was no sun and I wanted to take a break, I set up my stroller next to me for shade while I sat on the service road or Route 66. James eventually caught up and we both laid down on our sleeping pads. Tomer had gone back to Amarillo for a few hours but met up back with me here for my turn to interview. We got the microphones set up and the camera was rolling. As we approached a bridge about a half mile later, we saw James sprawled in the shade. This was clearly a much nicer spot than where we rested before. We continued rolling, until around sunset. Tomer ended up walking about 2.5 miles with me, so he really got a taste of the experience! James got ahead while we were filming as well. Once the sun set, the misquote were absolutely horrid. They were as bad as I had ever seen them, with literal clouds swarming my legs. As the night got colder, the wind blew harder and the problem was eventually fixed. I stopped at a Mexican restaurant about 2.5 miles out at 11, and enjoyed a gluttonous meal there. Given I didn’t really eat anything since subway in the morning, I got an Al Pastor burrito, steak fajitas, and four tacos. I left and enjoyed a peaceful walk to the hotel in Amarillo. I met James and Tomer there, watched some Family Guy, and went to bed.
