Today I (Sam) woke up excited to go to Dhillon’s Taste of India, an Indian restaurant at the truck stop in the town of San Jon, NM, where we were staying. James called to see whether their buffet was open in the morning, and unfortunately it wasn’t. No more Dhillon’s Taste of India. We went to the gas station. I ordered some hot tamales and a few sandwiches. The tamales were actually incredible. I was blown away by how much some spice could enhance the flavor of a boring frozen tamale. It began raining outside, so we decided to sit in the gas station lounge until it passed. We left about 7 hours later! This was not before having a nice conversation with the super kind clerks, Ken and Adam. We bought some gloves and headed off into the light rain/mist and cold temperature. The walking wasn’t all that bad, and we had a great conversation with our dear friend John about a new Nerf Gun free for all game that we and our 9 other friends from high school would be playing. At 11pm, I began watching Formula 1 qualifying for the Japanese GP. Adam also stopped by to say hello on his way home from work! After about 12 miles, we found a decent spot on the side of the road and pitched our tents. I made sure to stake my tent in tightly to avoid any water getting in from the rain.
The greatest challenge today was definitely leaving the gas station. It is simply tough having to leave the comfort of a warm lounge to begin walking in the wet cold.
