Today was horrible. One of the worst days of the trip. We woke up to snow caking our tents and the freezing cold. At around 11am, the frigid conditions were bearable enough to get going. My (Sam) hands were freezing, but I was able to get my things together. Off to be road. The “road was nothing more than a bumpy dirt path riddled with rocks. As the sun reached its peak, the snow began melting, resulting in the dirt turning into mud. This proved to be a colossal challenge. The road soon became unwalkable, as our strollers were simply unable to trudge through the deep slop of mud. We tried to go on the grass around the road, but we realized this was not feasible either due to it being littered with large rocks that would halt the stroller every five steps. The walking day ended when I attempted to turn my stroller in the mud and the spokes on my wheel snapped, as if the day could not have been going any better. I called James over and, despite being now stranded on this road with no cell service, simply laughed at how comical the day was becoming. Thankfully, James had service and we were able to gamelan a way to get to the Walmart in Grants, NM (which we already passed). We decided that we needed to flag down one of the scarce cars that passed and ask then if they’d be able to give us a ride. Thankfully, a man named Samy agreed to drive us in the morning. We were also very lucky, as this was the first car we flagged down. We proceeded to set up our tents and call it a day afterwards.
