I (James) was nice and warm in my tent, but when I climbed out, the strong wind quickly made me cold again. As usual, it was a challenge taking apart the tent in the windy conditions. It was a cold day and the 25mph winds made walking pretty miserable. About 2 miles in, we stopped in the town of Fence Lake by the community center, which had been converted from an old school. We ended up sitting there for awhile, and eventually a woman named Crystal stopped by in her car. She was heading inside and asked us if we wanted to get out of the cold. We went inside, and she brought us to a common room where we could sit. The building did not have any heating, but she plugged in 2 heaters for us to warm up next to. She talked with us while putting up decorations for the community Halloween party that would be happening in a few days. We also got to meet Crystal’s mother, Shelly, as well as Shelly’s husband Russell. Crystal’s two daughters, who ride the bus an hour and a half each way to school in Quemado, also came by in the late afternoon. We ended up staying there until 7pm and were dreading a full night of walking in 20 degree weather with wind blowing in our face. Sam’s mother would be coming tomorrow to walk with us, so we decided it would be better to wait here in Fence Lake for her to meet us. We pitched our tents behind the building to get some shelter for the wind. There was a cellular tower right next to us that was only compatible with AT&T, so Sam had full bars while my Verizon reception was nonexistent. I used his hot spot and we both watched Thursday Night Football before going to bed.
