We enjoyed a slow morning, as Sam’s mother waited for the Uber to navigate the back roads and reach our coordinates. A little after noon, the Uber arrived and we said goodbye to Sam’s mother. She also got us a motel for the night in St. John’s, which was 20 miles away and a nice thing to look forward to for the day. The road was still unpaved, but it was pretty pleasant for the most part. Near St. John’s, there was a section of the road that was dirt. The trucks continually passing through had lifted the dirt into the air to create a fog, and my sunglasses were a necessity to protect my eyes. With a few miles left to go, I (James) picked up a flat tire. I was in no mood to fix it on the side of the road in the dark, so I just kept going. At around 8pm, we arrived at the motel. After dropping off my stuff, I took a short walk to Circle K to get some hot dogs for dinner. I could see kids out and about for Halloween, and it was comforting both to see people celebrating the holiday and to be in a town large enough for people to actually go trick-or-treating. The motel was also a nice way to end our first full day in Arizona (we had crossed over the border at the very end of the previous day).
