After a cold night where we had heard the coyotes howling, we started unpacking the tents in the late morning. I (James) had taped one of my tent stakes with duct tape around the area where my pole was broken, and the makeshift splint had held up well throughout the night. I was having a tough start to the day and took a few short breaks here and there while Sam walked on ahead. In the town of Heber-Overgaard, I stopped at June’s Cafe for a meal. While there, I met a nice couple who lived in the area. They expressed interest in my journey and kindly picked up my check as well. I continued on for a few miles before stopping at Circle K to use the bathroom and stock up on food and water. The sun began to set, and the combination of a relatively small shoulder and a decent amount of cars on the road was less than ideal. I received a visit from a police officer, who had received a call from a concerned driver. As usual, he was friendly and let me continue on my way. After a long night, I arrived at a nice spot off the road that Sam had picked out.
