Today we woke up to some pretty intense fog at around 7:30am. Tomer came by early because he was going to film us during the sunrise. It was tough getting out of the tent, especially because the condensation from the nighttime was still covering my rain fly. I (Sam) packed up, and Tomer conducted a few interviews with James and I while also getting some drone footage. Tomer was then getting ready to leave when he realized that his car wouldn’t start. We figured that the battery was dead, so he flagged down a car on the road to help us. Tomer got his engine back up and running, and he was off. James and I continued down the road and could see the outskirts of Phoenix in the distance. It was going to be a long 31 mile day, so we decided to take a break at Dennys about 12 miles in. This break ended up taking quite a large chunk out of our day, as we spent about 3 hours sitting there. It was tough to get up knowing that we still had 19 miles to go. We continued onward as it began to get dark. The route was somewhat smooth sailing until we reached a busy road at night with no shoulder. Our only other choice was to go on the side, which was riddled with rocks. Fortunately, we made it though this stretch safely. With about 9 miles left in the day, James was on the brink of throwing in the towel, but he ended up pushing through. We made it to my friend’s house where I was going to spend the next few nights. James dropped his stuff off and ordered a Lyft to get to the house he would be staying at. He took some of his belongings that he’d wash, such as his tent and clothes. Upon arriving at the house, James realized that the security code was not working. After several failed attempts, he decided to go out in a nearby park to spend the night (it was also 3am, too late to wake up his host). Unfortunately, James left one of his broken poles back with me at my friend’s house, so he set up his tent in the park with only one pole! The thought of this is pretty gross, but fortunately the man he would be staying with texted James to see if everything was alright. James was able to sleep in a bed tonight! Hurray for James!
