Day 157: Interstate Night Walking

I (James) started packing up around 9am before heading down the road a mile to Denny’s. Sam started a bit later and met me there. We ended up spending a few hours there before finally heading out. We had 4 more days of walking before Thanksgiving, and I was definitely feeling the effects of not having had a rest day in over a week. I took a bunch of short breaks before catching up to Sam at a gas station 8 miles in. There would not be anywhere to stock up for the next 60 miles, so we made sure to load up on food and water. At about 5:30pm, we left the gas station and headed into the interstate. As usual, walking on the interstate at night was very unpleasant. We had also been kicked off the interstate a few days ago in Arizona, so this worry was always in the back of our heads. The backroads were unpaved and added extra mileage to the walk, so we just had to hope for the best. We walked until around 10pm and found a nice spot off the highway to pitch the tents.
