We started off from the park a little after 9. A few miles in, we were stopped by a man named Ed, who handed us each a Gatorade and two candy bars. He had seen us walking and picked up these snacks for us at the gas station. He told us all about his experience hiking the Appalachian trail - which he did twice! It turned out his son Matt lived in the town we were walking to, so they offered to let us pitch our tents on the lawn there. We made it there around 6:45, where Ed, Matt, and several of Matt's friends were waiting for us. They invited us inside for pizza and beer, and then we went back out to go by Spruce Creek, which is a famous fishing creek that several former U.S. presidents have fished at. We went for a swim in the creek while the others fished, and then we all enjoyed some fireworks. After everyone left, Matt invited us in to do our laundry, shower, and watch Catch Me If You Can. We are extremely grateful for Ed and Matt's hospitality and kindness and couldn't have asked for a better 4th of July.

So much progress. A 29 mile walk is mind bending. Following you guys on your journey every day is wonderful - experiencing America with you. Thank you. You are both showing what Independence Day means. Each day. Keep well. And don’t hesitate to buy new shoes when needed. Philip
