Day 22: the SWEET sounds of trucks passing by

We set out with the goal of walking 40 miles and arriving at our friend Fionn’s place in Pittsburgh that evening. I (James) set out a little after 8. At 10:30, I called Sam and heard the clattering of plates at Dean’s Diner, so I knew he was off to another slow morning. Route 22 was incredibly loud all day, with trucks also blowing dirt and smoke exhaust in our faces from time to time. I stopped at several Sheetz gas stations along the way, but kept my breaks short with the 40 mile goal still achievable. By around 9:00pm, I had walked 30 miles and was determined to be in Pittsburgh before midnight. However, my parents begged me not to walk through the city at night, as I would be a vulnerable target with a stroller full of valuable items. I reluctantly obliged and found a nice patch of grass of the highway 8.5 miles away from Pittsburgh. I looked forward to a nice good night’s sleep, while Sam was 8 miles back with a fair bit of walking left. He cursed himself for lounging around the tent earlier that morning as he slowly trudged along into the pitch black night.
