Day 5: Took a Detour and Met Some Cool Locals

Today featured a slow start. We slept in due to a late night the previous evening, and found no success after looking for a jogger stroller to replace our Walmart shopping carts. While we were able to bask in the sunlight of some beautifully paved roads, we were soon faced with a dilemma as the road we were supposed to walk on had no shoulder and was exceptionally busy. We decided to take a detour, struggling uphill on some small suburban roads. At the end of one such hill we ran into two locals, Beth and Lisa, who were very nice to us and provided direction for where to go next. Afterwards, while sitting outside of a pizza parlor in Randolph, NJ during a break, we were greeted by a waitress who asked us if we needed any help. After telling her our story, she offered us two free slices of pizza! She plans to keep up with our adventure as well. Towards the end of our walk, we stopped at a gas station for water where the cashier asked if we were homeless. After explaining that we weren't, he told us about how he was recently homeless for nine months. He described his struggles, and even provided us with tips on how to best live without a hard roof over our heads. Finally, we decided to camp out at Randolph Township Veterans Park, which is up to date the nicest spot we have camped out in. It even had a hose with which we could wash off the grime that has accumulated over the last 5 days. We plan for an early morning tomorrow to hit the 25 miles threshold.
