Day 52: WE WERE ON THE NEWS!!!

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

Today was one of the most memorable days of the trip. We woke up in the morning to the concerned voices of several pastors. They asked if anyone was in the tent, to which I (Sam) responded yes. After admitting to them that we did not have permission to be camping on the church lawn, they invited us to join the Sunday Service. James and I quickly took down our camp to make the service at 10:30. The Service was wonderful, led by Pastor Larry. Afterwards, a kind man named Robert invited us out to lunch at a Mexican restaurant with several fellow church goers. We enjoyed massive burritos along with some great conversation. During the meal, a woman named Cindy suggested that she reach out to the local news channel (WITH Channel 10) to cover our story. After a few calls, a reporter was set to interview us at the church at 2pm. We went back to the church, and the interview commenced. The reporter, a recent IU graduate, told us that we would be on either the 6pm or 10pm broadcast. James and I were very excited. We stayed at the church, where an emergency situation training session was going on. One of the trainers offered us to shoot each other with the airsoft guns they were using at the end, which we gladly accepted. They didn’t hurt too bad. Pastor Larry was also kind enough to let us use the shower in his office to clean off. Feeling fresh, James and I went to the playground behind the church to set up our tents for the night. Around 6pm, Brian, one of the Pastors invited us to speak with the children at the church’s evening daycare about our trip. We answered many questions from the eager kids and also enjoyed some pasta for dinner. Once the kids left, we talked with Pastor Brian for another 30 minutes before heading out back to crash in our tents. It was an eventful day to say the least! Thank you to the people of Second Chance Chapel for taking us in as one of their own!
