Day 57: happy birthday Sam!

After a night of repeatedly sliding down the tent and crawling back up (we were sleeping on a slant), we were determined to start early and avoid the treacherous night walking that we encountered the previous night. Today was Sam’s birthday, and he wished to never have to walk again at night. We stopped first at a Dollar General in the town of Altamont about 6 miles in. We then walked another 9 miles, passing through the town of St. Elmo before stopping in Brownstown for our midday rest. After the rest, we walked another 11 miles to the town of Vandalia. Along the way, we passed a large group of cows who started walking alongside us along the fence. In Vandalia, we went to Ponderosa Steakhouse for a buffet dinner in celebration of Sam’s birthday. We had about half an hour to eat before closing, so we ate as much as we could before heading out. We then went to Starmax Cinemas to watch Bullet Train at 9:30pm. The movie was pretty mediocre but somewhat entertaining, and I also dozed off from time to time. After the movie, we pitched our tents on the grass behind the theater. The grass was not mowed, which made the ground feel very soft underneath our tents.
