Today we woke up at a busy rest stop to the demands of the rest stop security guard to “pack it up”. Thankfully it was already around 9am and we were ready to “pack it up” regardless. We were immediately met with trouble as we had to cross the interstate to get on the road we needed to walk on, and there was hardly a gap we could run through between cars. Eventually we found one, and we walked on Route 66 which featured no shoulder! We were careful. Our first stop was at a gas station about 4 miles in to resupply and use the restroom. We then continued another 6 or so miles to go to Cracker Barrel, which was unfortunately crowded and had a wait time. We went to Jack-in-the-Box instead and rested for a little over an hour. Neither of us had ever been, and their egg rolls were delicious. We continued onward, once again with Route 66 providing very little shoulder. A police officer stopped by and asked if everything was ok to which I (Sam) responded yes and explained our circumstances. It was a pleasant exchange and he provided me with directions on how to get to our next town, Cuba, MO. We stopped at a gas station about 6 miles out to get Chef Boyardee. This was to avoid eating peanuts for dinner—Chef Boyardee ravioli tastes more like a real dish. Darkness came, and we were met with a fence blocking the road we were supposed to walk on about 0.5 miles from Hood Park where we were planning to sleep. We trudged through the grass next to the road for what felt like 20 minutes until we finally arrived at the park. We set up our tents and hopped in. About 45 minutes later (now 11:30pm) we were met by cops who asked what we were doing and said that we needed to leave the park before sunrise. Sadly that means we have to wake up at 5am with little sleep. On the bright side, we found a nice diner that opens at 6am which will provide us with the fuel we need to march after a sleepless night. Now I will be catching some shuteye.
