Day 74: James’ Seeks Shelter in a Small Hut

I got going around 8:30 while Sam was still in the tent. I stopped 9 miles in at Dairy Queen and took a nice long break there. Around 3pm, it started to pour while I was walking. Fortunately, I was right by a Dollar General, so I took shelter under the awning in front of the store after buying a few things there. Around 5pm, it stopped raining, so I started to walk again. There was still a chance of raining later on, but I decided I’d take my chances. Unfortunately, about an hour later in started pouring. I stood under a tree talking to Claudia on the phone while getting soaked. She suggested that I try to find a place nearby to seek shelter, so I checked and saw that there was church less than a mile away. As I was getting back on the road, a few cars stopped by to check on me, as I had left the stroller alone by the side of the road (they were likely concerned about an abandoned infant stuck in the pouring rain). As I was walking, I saw a row of small wooden huts for sale on the side of the road. I tried the first door with no success, but the second one opened right up. I moved all my stuff in and checked the weather. It would be raining well into the night. I decided to sleep here for the night, and hung my clothes up on the rafters. It was very nice to have a cozy little home and not have to worry about setting up the tent. I was very close to the road (and the railroad tracks), so I would wake up at times due to the noise. I could also feel the ground beneath me vibrate when a big truck drove by, but I liked my setup and had no complaints.
