Today I (Sam) woke up at 8am to water dripping onto my face. I was half asleep still until I realized that my sleeping pad was surrounded by a puddle of water. It had rained through the night and I was somewhat excited because of how cozy it is to be in a tent while the water is smacking the rain fly. This excitement was soon drained! My sleeping bag was soon soaked as were my shoes once I decided to hike over to Walmart to avoid the wet misery. James’ tent somehow remained dry. Perhaps I did not do a great job staking my rain fly. I sat at Walmart for a good hour until I decided it was time to treat myself to breakfast at Denny’s. I ordered an eggs Benedict with an extra side of hash browns and sat in the restaurant for another 1.5 hours. Finally, around noon, I trudged through the rain to my wet tent. The rain was reduced to a drizzle at this point, so I took everything out and drained out the water. I then got back into my tent as it was supposed to rain until 2pm. Once 2pm hit, we left and James found a bowling alley where we decided to bowl a couple of rounds. James and I ended up bowling 16 rounds and met a competitive bowler, Mr. Anderson, whose son was on track to receive a college scholarship for the sport. Mr. Anderson saw James and I try to spin the bowling ball like the pros, and he subsequently fetched a “real ball” for us to use. This totally changed the game, as these denser balls are much more receptive to spin. After this experience I am seriously considering joining a competitive bowling league once I get back in Chicago. After about 3 hours at the bowling alley it was getting dark, and we went to Aldi to stock up on some food. Dinner was cold sausage. We then proceeded to night walk for about 6 miles until we arrived at a nice church. I caught up with a friend from college on the phone for most of this part which was nice. There were some people nearby but we made sure to be quiet when setting up our tents.
