Today I (Sam) woke up with a splitting migraine, which kept me facedown in the tent for about an hour before finally getting out. James got out too, and it was apparent that we were both exhausted. I was not ready to walk with the way I was feeling. It is important to know that we had walked about 9 straight days at this point without a rest day. This definitely contributed to the way we were feeling. We eventually decided to take a rest day in Wheeler, TX. I immediately walked to a Mexican restaurant up the road that we passed the night before that looked good called Santos. There I ordered some fajitas and tamales and had a nice conversation with the waitress, Jessica, who was a native of Wheeler, TX. I sat at the restaurant for about 3 hours before heading back to the church we had slept at the night before. James was buying some groceries from Dollar General at the time, so I was alone. It was then that a Sheriff pulled up to see what we were doing. I explained the situation and he asked if we were going to sleep by the church. I said yes and then he offered to put us up in the Wheeler motel. Apparently, the town has a voucher system for people traveling through! We were extremely grateful and also excited to sleep there! James and I showered up and watched a little WWE before heading off to bed. The last few days have been very challenging mentally. Even though our mileage isn’t necessarily that much higher than otherwise, walking for 9 straight days certainly takes a toll. The rest day was a much needed boost, and it was nice to take it in the warm town of Wheeler.
